Every pair of KUNSTENs is handmade to order in our European workshop, eliminating the need for excess inventory and overproduction.

It all starts with our signature bendable sole made of aspen wood. The aspen wood was mindfully selected as it provides a strong, lightweight, knot-free base. This wood is incredibly flexible and known for its durability and natural shock absorption. When sourcing our wood, we ensure sustainability by planting two aspen trees in place of every one aspen tree we use.

Designed with nature in mind, our clogs are intentionally constructed to help reduce the build-up of static electricity. Our aspen wood sole paired with natural materials was chosen not only for its quality and comfort, but for the way it interacts with the world beneath our feet. Unlike highly synthetic footwear that can encourage static build-up, our natural construction helps static charge dissipate more naturally, meaning fewer of those little shocks throughout the day. It is a small detail you may never think about, but one we considered from the beginning.

Our soles are then carefully finished with a natural non-slip rubber outsole. This is adhered using a non toxic, Nordic eco-labeled glue from Denmark, trusted in Formula 1.

These soles are engineered to last a lifetime.

We source premium surplus and deadstock materials from respected mills in the US, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, France, and Japan, giving new life to materials and reducing industry waste while creating footwear made to last.

In addition, when we have excess suede or denim from our own production, we recycle it back into our patchwork shoes. This makes each pair not only more environmentally conscious, but also one of a kind.

Our leather and Premium Italian suedes use a white-tanning technique to naturally dye them to one of our signature hues. Our shearling pairs use bioline to carefully dye the pure lambswool into the desired color.  Then the soft vegan inner lining is attached. Lastly, the suede is sprayed with a non-toxic protection before being sent to you. KUNSTEN shoes are 100% natural products your feet and body will love!

Every process is done by hand, and each pair passes through around 40 hands before it is finished.

We use our signature zigzag stitching with the finest German threads, and every seam and under-stitching is carefully steamed to strengthen the construction and help it last.

Some parts of the process can only be learned through years of experience. Danyta, our most experienced clog maker, has been kramping, the traditional process of carefully stapling the leather upper to the wooden sole, for more than 20 years. She knows the exact rhythm, pressure, and placement needed for this incredibly precise step. It is a skill guided as much by feel as by sight.

Before assembly, every upper is steamed and shaped by hand. Once the clogs are assembled, they spend the night in a heated oven, allowing the materials to settle into their final shape. The next morning, they are given an ice-cold shock, setting the form and completing a process that has been refined over generations of clog-making.

From the first stitch to the final shape, there are no shortcuts, just skilled hands, time, heat, cold, and an extraordinary amount of care behind every pair.
